Free continuous phase rotation vs RX-style repair and polarity-only tools
Different jobs get confused under the word "phase." Polarity invert is a 180° flip. RX-style repair often means spectral editing, denoise, or dialogue cleanup. Continuous phase rotation (PHIXER) is a third tool: frequency-aware L/R rotation for leftover stereo fights that cancel bass in mono. This is a fit map, not a smear.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux). Amount / From / To rotate problem bands so mono fold keeps low end without flattening stereo. It is not a polarity button, not a time-aligner, and not an RX-style spectral editor.
Three tools, three jobs
| Tool class | What it changes | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Polarity invert (Ø) | 180° flip of a whole path | First fix for DI+mic, top/bottom, wrong-wired cables |
| RX-style repair / spectral edit | Noise, clicks, dialogue surgery, spectral paint | Cleanup and restoration, not L/R phase rotation |
| PHIXER (continuous phase rotation) | Frequency-aware L/R phase | Residual stereo cancellation after polarity and timing hygiene |
Deep dives: polarity invert vs continuous phase rotation, polarity vs phase, stereo null test / correlation check.
When PHIXER fits
- Stereo print still hollows in mono after Ø and sample-align.
- Cancel is band-specific (lows gone, highs wide) so a single flip is too blunt.
- You want continuous rotation, not 0° / 180° only.
- Budget is free and you need a utility, not a restoration suite.
When polarity-only is enough
Flip first
If inverting one mic or bus restores body on a true mono sum, stop. You did not need spectral rotation. See polarity vs continuous rotation.
Prove with null / correlation
Hear cancel on purpose, then flip. Habit: null-test workflow.
When RX-style repair is the right class
- Hum, hiss, clicks, room tone surgery, dialogue de-noise.
- Spectral paint / attenuate of a noise event in time-frequency.
- You are restoring a damaged take, not rotating L/R phase for mono fold.
PHIXER does not replace that class. Borrowing the word "repair" does not make them the same product.
Decision path
1. Mono-check
True L+R sum or phone speaker. Note what disappears.
2. Polarity / timing
Ø and sample-align real dual paths. Re-check mono.
3. Restoration only if needed
Noise, clicks, dialogue: use an RX-style tool. Do not reach for phase rotation to "denoise."
4. PHIXER for residual spectral L/R fights
After hygiene, if a stereo bed still cancels by band, try free continuous phase rotation. Mono-check again.
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- A polarity flip already restores mono body.
- You need denoise / click repair / dialogue surgery (wrong class).
- You want PHIXER as a widener or Haas delay. Wrong job.
- The source is already mono.
Quick path: Mono-check → polarity / timing → RX-style only for restoration → PHIXER only for leftover continuous L/R phase fights → mono-check again.
